The Albany Junior High Lady Cubs’ volleyball team had their busiest day of the season Saturday as each played three matches at the Hawley tournament.

On Tuesday, the seventh grade played at Woodson and the eighth grade played at Ranger. Both teams will play Abilene TLC next Tuesday

Eighth Grade

The eighth grade team got the week started on Sept. 21 by defeating Rising Star 25-6, 25-13.

“The kids continue to show improvement,” coach Missy Dutchover said. “They did a good job serving.”

On Saturday, the eighth grade team reached the third place match of the tournament despite having only seven players available.

Albany opened the day y beating Early 13-25, 25-13, 15-8.

“The girls got off to a slow start, but came back strong in the next two sets,” Dutchover said. “Caroline Chapman had a very good service game.”

In the semifinals, Albany lost to Breckenridge 12-25, 25-10, 9-15. In the third place match, Albany lost to Miles 13-25, 25-9, 15-17.

“We battled point for point in the third set,” Dutchover said. “Overall, the girls played very well in the tournament. They were very competitive and battled all day long.”

The eighth grade team made one more trip to Hawley on Monday and defeated Brownwood B 25-14, 25-18 to improve to 6-2.

Seventh Grade

The seventh grade team went 1-2 at the Hawley tournament with both losses coming in three sets.

Albany opened with a 12-25, 25-10, 9-15 loss to Early. Charlee Hefner was the leading server with 19 points, followed by Zayne Lefevre and Amber Miramontes with six each.

In the second round, Albany swept Hawley 25-17, 25-10. Miramontes led the team with 10 service points, followed by Hefner with nine, Lefevre with eight, and Tatum Grady with seven.

Albany closed out the tourney with a 23-25, 25-20, 9-15 loss to Sweetwater. Hefner has 12 service points with Miramontes and Lefevre each recording nine.

“It was a competitive tournament playing against the larger schools,” coach Ginger Norton said. “It was good for the girls to play stronger teams, and it will make them better finishing out the season.”
