Both junior high football teams got back in the win column last week in Hawley, improving to 2-1 for the season.

The Cubs will travel to Peaster on Thursday (today) for games starting at 4:30 p.m. for the seventh grade. The eighth grade game will follow at about 5:45 p.m.

The seventh grade Cubs shut out Hawley 20-0 last week.

Dalton Richards scored all three touchdowns for the Cubs, the first on a 31-yard run that was followed by the two-point run by Ashton Bailey.

Richards scored twice more, including a 72-yard run around the end. The try for extra points failed.

Details for the other touchdown were not available.

“I was very proud of how we moved the ball,” coach David Fairchild said. “I thought our offensive line of John Birkla, Laithe Leech, Lane Morgan, Hagen Miller, and Asher Brown did a good job for us.”

The coach said the Cubs had a number of missed tackles on defense.

“We had some alignment issues, but we will continue to get better,” he said. “Branson Beal had a nice interception to stop a Hawley drive. Overall, it was a good win.

The eighth grade Cubs won their game in Hawley 30-14.

The Cubs pounced early after a fumble recovery by Adam Hill, who then returned it seven yards for a touchdown.

Hill got the call again to score on the second drive, as well as catching the two-point pass from Lute Wheeler to take a 14-8 lead at the half.

The Cubs moved ahead 22-14 in the third period on a run by Lanxton Viertel. The two-point play was no good.

Albany recovered the ball on the ensuing kickoff and marched down for their final score.

Wheeler ran the ball four yards on a keeper for the TD, then passed it to Viertel for the two-pointer.

“We played very well on offense,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “We moved the ball on the ground and in the air. We knew this would be a tough game because we had so many kids in new positions due to injuries, and the guys responded well and came away with a big win.”
