Jr. high football teams open with wins

The junior high football teams both started the season well last Thursday with wins over visiting Dublin teams.

The Cubs will host Eastland on Thursday (today) starting at 4:30 p.m. with the seventh grade game. The games were on the schedule to be played in Eastland on Thursday, but were moved this week to Albany.

The eighth grade Cubs defeated Dublin 30-0 in the season opener last week.

“The Cubs looked great dominating Dublin,” coach Richard Sullivan said. “It was a fantastic start and a building block for the team.”

The coach said that the team has lined up a solid schedule for the season, with the goal of improving their play each week.

Scoring the first tally for the Cubs was Samuel Rosas on a 25-yard run, with Caden Price running in the two-point conversion.

Price scored a touchdown in the second quarter, followed by Cole Chapman hitting Price with a two-point pass.

Rosas scored again in the third quarter, with Chapman teaming up with Tyler Waddell for the extra points.

The final tally came in the fourth period on a three-yard by London Fuentes. The PAT attempt failed.

Offensive standouts included Price and Rosas at running back, and Tye Edgar on the offensive line.

Linebacker Koy Cauble and tackle Coy Knight were both tapped as deffensive standouts.

The seventh grade Cubs kicked off their season with a 22-6 win over Dublin.

“The offense was never stopped,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “We had the ball four times, scoring on three possessions and ending the game on the fourth series.”

The coach commended the offensive line for a great job of blocking and opening up holes during the rainy game that forced the team to keep the ball on the ground.

“Lanxton Viertel, Adam Hill, Cason Fairchild, Tyler Chapman, and Lute Wheeler all carried the ball for us, with Viertel, Hill, and Fairchild each scoring a touchdown,” the coach said. “Fairchild also passed to Viertel on a pair of two-point conversions.”

Offensive linemen praised by the coach were Zane Waggoner, Cole Read, Cort Peterson, Austin Sanchez, Cooper Edgar, Sterlin Hobbs, Izayik Bell, and Kolt Koemel.

The Cubs gave up only one score on a broken play just before the half, according to the coach.

In the second half, the Cubs forced a fumble on Dublin’s lone offensive play, with Waggoner coming up with the recovery in the backfield.

The coach credited Waggoner, Peterson, and Bryson Herring with several important defensive stops. Other defensive standouts named by the coach were Ayden Balliew, Houston Heatly, J.J. Clark, and Chapman.
