Jr. high basketball teams sweep Hamlin games

The Albany Junior High Lady Cubs basketball teams swept their home games Monday against Hamlin, allowing a total of 16 points.

The White team won 33-8 with the Red team posting a 36-8 victory. In both games, Hamlin went without scoring in the second and third quarters.

In boys action at Hamlin, Albany won all three games. The eighth grade Cubs won 36-23, the seventh grade 31-27, and the combo team 12-10. 

Both boys and girls programs make their last outings before the semester break on Monday, Dec. 13 against Anson. The boys will be at home for the first time since Nov. 15, with the girls on the road. Games at both locations start at 5:30 p.m.

 Girls White Team

Albany built a 13-2 lead in the first quarter and held a 25-2 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

Hattie Braly led the Lady Cubs with 13 points, and Brooke Richards scored eight. Zayne Le­fevre added five points, Ashlyn Miller four, and Charlee Hefner three.

Girls Red Team

Albany scored 30 consecutive points, turning a 6-4 lead late in the first quarter into a 36-4 lead with less than two minutes to go in the game.

Braylee Clark and Mimi Ivy scored nine points apiece to lead the team, with Amber Miramontes adding six points. Caroline Chapman finished with five points, while Kaisley Bartee scored three and Madison Parrott and Alli McDaniel two each.

 Boys Eighth Grade

Albany used a big fourth quarter to pull away after nursing a slim lead through the first three periods.

The Cubs led 8-7 at the end of the first period and 18-16 at halftime. Up 25-21 after three, Albany outscored Hamlin 11-2 in the fourth.

Mason McCloy scored 13 points and Brody Oliver scored 12 to lead the Cubs. Huffman Heatly added five points, with Cade Fairchild scoring four and Lane Helle two.

Boys Seventh Grade

The Cubs held off Hamlin’s comeback bid after building a big lead.

Albany led 7-4 after the first quarter and 16-6 at the half. The lead was 26-12 after three before Hamlin closed with a 15-5 edge in the fourth.

Sam Vickers and Nicholas Gjerpe each scored eight points to lead the Cubs. Connor Smith added six points, followed by Colter Edgar with four, Zane Green with three, and Wesley Gleitz with two.

Boys Combo Team

The combo team picked up its first win after having its previous game cancelled.

The Cubs led 7-4 at halftime and held on in the second half.

Gatlin Wills and Rowdy New scored three points apiece. Tebow Sargent, Ryan Turner, and Zak Presley scored two points apiece.
