Joshua Dyer hits grand slam in McMurry game
By Sam Waller
Albany graduate Joshua Dyer made his first home run with the McMurry Warhawks one to remember, hitting his first college grand slam in a recent home game.
Dyer connected in the eighth inning of 14-12 loss to University of the Ozarks on Monday, Feb. 28 at McMurry’s Walt Driggers Field.
Dyer finished 3 for 5 in the game as the designated hitter. McMurry trailed 14-2 in the seventh inning before rallying with five runs in the seventh and five in the eighth.
Dyer’s blast, which came on the first pitch he saw from Ozarks pitcher Joshua Ropple, ended the scoring.
“I was looking for a pitch I could handle,” Dyer sai. “We had three guys on, so I really wanted to get some runs in. (Ropple) gave me a pitch I could handle, I put a barrel on it, and it just happened to go out.”
Dyer, a sophomore infielder at McMurry, graduated from Albany High School in 2019 before attending Navarro College for two years.
In seven games through Saturday, March 5, he was hitting .345 in 29 at bats. He has appeared at first base, third base, and DH after missing the first nine games because of illness.
