HS track teams gear up for home track meet
By Sam Waller
Alban Lions and Lady Lions track and field athletes returned from spring break to compete Thursday, March 20 at the Haskell Indian Relays.
Albany will host the Roarin’ Lion Relays on Thursday, March 27 (today) in its final outing before the District 10-2A meet on Wednesday, April 2 at Cisco.
At Haskell, the Albany varsity boys finished fourth in the team standings with 94 points. The Lady Lions totaled 38 points for sixth place with the junior varsity boys scoring 41 for sixth. The meet did not have a JV girls division.
“We did some good things, but we’ve got some things we’ve got to better at,” boys coach Rod Britting said. “Some guys are almost in a midseason slump, some aches and pains going on. I had two guys who weren’t able to run because of injuries.”
Among the good things were all three relays earning medals, placing higher as the meet progressed. The 400 relay took bronze, the 800 relay silver and the 1600 relay gold to account for 48 points.
“We had some good times,” Britting said. “All three relays did better.”
The Lions earned five individual medals, with Jakobi Roberson winning the triple jump while Jayce Tinkle and Wesley Gleitz went 1-2 in the 400. Tony Wheeler was second in the pole vault and fourth in the 200. Aaden Mendez tied for third in the 100 and Adrian Wren was sixth in the discus.
“Jayce and Wesley both ran real well in the 400,” Britting said. “Jakobi had a PR in the triple jump, and Tony did well in the pole vault with a PR.”
The Lady Lions brought home four medals, including two gold.
“They’re all competing hard and doing well,” girls coach Lauren Peacock said. “Their times are comparing well to others in the district. We’re just ready to get there.”
Ashlyn Miller won the 800 as well as placing third in the high jump and 400.
“Ashlyn improved her time in the 800 by three seconds,” Peacock said. “We’re trying to keep Ashlyn in the 800, so she will gain more endurance for the 400 so that when we get later down the road, it’ll benefit her.”
Zayne Lefevre won the 200 in her only event of the meet.
“Zayne had a great run,” Peacock said. “We’re going to focus on her in the 200 since she’s unable to train for the 400 like we want to because of her back.”
Avery Everitt finished fourth in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles.
In the JV boys, Braxton Henry won the pole vault in addition to placing sixth in the 400 and Brooks Neece won the shot put. Cash Edgar and Neece went 2-3 in the discus. The 800 relay finished fifth and Seth Barrett was fifth in the 100.
“Braxton did well in the JV pole vault,” Britting said. “The JV throwers did a good job.”
Now, there’s one more meet to get ready for district.
“Lots of good things happened; we’ve just got to keep on working at it,” Britting said. “We’ve got some pretty tough competition in our district. Anytime we do something, we’ve got to look and see what they did and what we need to do to be competitive against it.”
The Roarin’ Lions Relays, which will have eight schools in attendance, get started at 10:00 a.m. today with field events. Running events start at 1:00 p.m.
“We always hope to do well at the home meet and be competitive,” Britting said. “We just want to get some consistency in some things and continue inching forward. A lot of times, it’s about confidence — you see a good week right before district, it gives you a little confidence to build into it.”
