Golf Tournaments Raise More Than $45,000
Two July golf tournaments at Albany Golf Club raised more than $45,000 for local organizations, with proceeds benefiting the Shackelford County Youth & Livestock Association and the Albany Masonic Lodge Wisdom Foundation. The club is also continuing several improvement projects while recovering from damage caused by the July 5 windstorm.
Supporting Local Causes
The Shackelford County Youth & Livestock Association held its annual three-person scramble July 18-19, with tournament organizer Reggy Spencer estimating the event will raise about $35,000.
The money will go into SCYLA’s general fund and help support the organization’s annual premium sale, providing additional financial support to Shackelford County youth who participate in livestock projects. The annual tournament has become one of the organization’s largest fundraisers and drew golfers from across the region for two days of competition.
One week earlier, the Albany Masonic Lodge hosted its annual Scholarship Golf Tournament at Albany Golf Club. Organizers said the July 11 tournament raised more than $10,000 for the Albany Masonic Lodge Wisdom Foundation.
Tournament proceeds help fund scholarships awarded each year to Albany High School graduates. Like the SCYLA tournament, the event has become an annual tradition that combines a day of golf with support for local students.
Improvements Around the Course
Even with two major tournaments completed, work continues around Albany Golf Club.
The July 5 windstorm tore the roof from the clubhouse patio. Club officials are waiting for an insurance adjuster to inspect the damage before beginning repairs.
Once repairs begin, much of the existing roof structure is expected to be reused to build a lean-to next to the equipment sheds, creating additional covered storage for maintenance equipment. After that project is complete, the clubhouse deck will be rebuilt and a new patio roof installed this fall.
Another project nearing completion is the new decorative iron fence along Holes 5 and 6. The fence replaces the decades-old pipe fence that borders the entrance road into the course. Limestone columns are expected to be added about every 30 feet during the next few weeks before the fence is painted.
The club also plans to install a new entrance gate that will allow the course to be closed when necessary.
Greens Continue to Improve
Golfers have responded positively to the new greens that were planted earlier this spring, and the new practice putting green near the clubhouse is now in regular use.
The improvements are part of several ongoing projects aimed at enhancing the course and clubhouse while maintaining one of Albany’s most popular recreational facilities.
The next event on Albany Golf Club’s tournament schedule is the Sam Tidwell Scholarship Tournament, scheduled for Aug. 8-9. The three-person scramble benefits Albany youth through the Sam Tidwell Scholarship Fund and is one of several charity tournaments remaining on the club’s 2026 calendar. Other upcoming events include the Labor Day Tournament on Sept. 5-6, the Xi Chi Pi Sorority Tournament on Sept. 26, the Kiwanis Tournament on Oct. 2 and the Club Championship on Oct. 10-11.
