The Albany Lady Lions basketball team surpassed their win total from last season in a busy, productive week, winning five of seven games.

The Lady Lions (6-5) began this week with a 50-17 win against Abilene TLCA on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at home.

In an addition to the original schedule, Albany will host Clyde at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9.

The Lady Lions got last week started on a positive note on Tuesday, Nov. 29 by winning 37-29 at Archer City.

That was followed by five games in three days at the Gorman tournament. On Thursday, Dec. 1, Albany dropped its opener to De Leon 39-45, but bounced back to beat Bangs JV 54-12. On Friday, Dec. 2, the Lady Lions beat Iredell 37-22 and lost to Merkel JV 27-30. Albany closed out its first tournament of the season with a 32-28 victory over May.

Against Archer City, the Lady Lions outscored the Lady Wildcats 11-3 in the fourth quarter to come back from a 10-point halftime deficit. Kiana Roberson scored 16 points with Briley Tabor adding 15.

“We had a really rough start, but the girls did a great job of coming out in the second half and fixing their mistakes,” coach Tate Thompson said. “Mainly, I was proud of their effort.”

At Gorman, Albany was 3-2 for the weekend, winning back-to-back games for the first time this season.

“This was a really good tournament for us,” Thompson said. “We got to see lots of different teams and lots of different game situations, and that’s always great in preparing for district. I believe we took some steps forward in developing as a team.”

Against De Leon, Roberson had 16 points and Caroline Chapman added 10. The Lady Lions had nine of 10 players score against Bangs JV, led by Roberson with 20.

On Saturday, Albany took control in the second quarter against Iredell. Roberson again scored 20 points.

Against Merkel JV, Albany battled back from a 12-1 deficit in the first quarter to trail by four at halftime, but couldn’t get over the hump. Roberson was the leading scorer with 14 points.

Albany closed out the weekend strong, outscoring May 10-5 in the fourth quarter after trailing most of the way. Roberson finished with 23 points.
