Girls take first 2 district games

The varsity Lady Lion basketball team opened district with a win over Cross Plains last week, then traveled to Stamford on Tuesday for the second league game.

Down by three at the half, Albany pulled ahead in the third quarter and held off Stamford in a big 46-45 win to up their district mark to 2-0 and go 15-8 for the season. Details of the bout will be reported next week.

The march towards the playoffs will continue on Friday, with Albany hosting Roscoe. The JV will take the floor at 4:00 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Lions will also be home on Tuesday, Jan. 15 to host Hawley as the first of two rounds of district play continues.

District Opener

The varsity posted a huge second quarter to pull away from Cross Plains for the win.

“We let nerves get the best of us in the first quarter, but once we settled down and stuck to the plan, we played very well,” head girls coach Tate Thompson said. “This was a great way to start off the district race.”

Alli Hill was the offensive standout, while Torie Fuentes and Jaleigh Morales were both picked for defense.

“I gave a couple of girls the task of hunting down their best player and both did a really good job,” the coach said. “We had some girls really step up and I am proud of them for the job they did.”

Scoring for the varsity were Morales 17, Hill 16, Fuentes 11, Elia Hebel 6, Jillian Guinn 2, Cydney Nelson 2, and Aubrey Moon 2.

JV Win

The JV girls also opened district with a win over Cross Plains, 41-13.

“The girls came out strong in their district opener and took control of the game from the start,” coach Richard Sullivan said. “The girls hustled and were aggressive, which led to the win. That helped prepare us to move forward in district.”

Offensive standouts were Addie Denton, Ansleigh Garcia and Ana Balliew. Named for defense were Sara Smith, Tana Thompson, and Balliew.
