Girls struggle to get back in the game

The Lady Lions dropped two straight games last week, falling to 1-3 in district competition.

The team hosts a rematch with Baird on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and will travel to Stamford next Tuesday, April 9, also with a 5:00 p.m. start.

Albany hosted Eula on Tuesday, falling 18-6 to the Lady Pirates. Details will be reported next week.

The Lady Lions lost a run-away game in Haskell on March 26, allowing the Maidens to jump out to an 8-0 lead in the first and continue to a 18-0 win.

“Our approach to the Haskell game was not a mature one,” coach Jimmy Fuentes said. “We were simply not ready to play, and we lacked competitiveness, which we can’t accept. Hopefully, we will not have to address that issue again this year.”

Sara Smith opened at the mound for Albany, allowing 13 runs on eight hits and three walks. Ana Balliew came in as relief, giving up five runs on four hits and one walk.

The team never got their offense going, with only two batters combining for three hits.

Albany lost in Hawley last Friday, 5-3.

“We did improve on those things on Friday against Hawley,” the coach said. “We just didn’t perform as well at the plate as we needed to and left too many runners stranded to miss out on some scoring opportunities.”

Both teams were scoreless through the third, with Hawley getting on the board with three runs in the fourth, followed by one each in the fifth and sixth. The Lady Lions finally answered with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Ana Balliew pitched five innings, allowing four runs on two hits and one walk. She had three strikeouts. Sara Smith came in for the final inning, giving up one run on two hits.
