Girls split first 2 district bouts

The Lady Lion basketball team opened district with a win in a tight game played in Cross Plains last week, beating the Lady Buffaloes 51-46.

Albany hosted Stamford in the second district match-up on Tuesday, dropping the bout in another close game, 40-43, to go 1-1 in the race for the title.

The JV girls also opened district in Cross Plains, making their first court appearance since November due to injuries. Able to put exactly five girls on the floor, the JV lost 27-18.

Both teams will travel to Roscoe on Friday for games starting at 4:00 p.m. for the JV and 6:30 p.m. for the varsity.

Albany will also be on the road in Hawley on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The varsity girls came out ahead in Cross Plains thanks to a fourth quarter effort.

“Cross Plains came to play and got after us,” coach Tate Thompson said. “I was very proud of the girls for fighting through and finding a way to win.”

Jaleigh Morales was the top offensive player, with Alli Hill named for defense by the coach.

“These girls are competitors, and that is what helps them find a way to win even in some of the toughest environments,” the coach said. “We were very glad to be 1-0 in district after that game.”

Scorers were Torie Fuentes 5, Brylee Moore 4, Hill 15, Morales 23, and Sarah Cotter 4.

JV Back on Court

The JV girls played for the first time in six weeks, coming up short 27-18 in Cross Plains.

“I was very proud of the effort the girls showed during the game,” coach M.J. Reneau said. “With only five players, they never got to rest, but the they never slowed down.”

She commended the team for the improvement they showed since last taking the court.

“The girls’ defense improved, and they were able to execute all their offenses quickly without mistakes,” the coach said. “We are excited about having these players back and healthy.”

She added that the JV girls worked hard in practice during the interim.
