The Albany Lions and Lady Lions concluded the third week of their summer conditioning programs this week with the girls now taking a break before resuming workouts in July.

The girls’ workouts will resume  Monday, July 18 and continue each Monday through Thursday  through July 28. Daily sessions will be 9:00-10:00 a.m.

Volleyball will have two more sessions of sport-specific instruction  10:30-11:30 a.m. on Thursdays – July 14 and 21.

After a day off on Monday, July 4, for the holiday, boys’ sessions will continue each Monday through Thursday until July 21. There will be just three days of workouts the first week of July, starting Tuesday, July 5.

Workouts include weight lifting, agility drills, and conditioning. Boys are also conducting one-hour skill sessions at 5:00 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

“Our participation is about the same as it has been,” Albany head football coach Denney Faith said. “There are about 20-25 boys who come regularly, with a pretty even split between high school and junior high.”

Summer workouts are regulated by UIL rules.

Preseason practices for high school football and volleyball begin Monday, Aug. 1. Junior high sports cannot hold practices until school starts.

Faith said letters containing all necessary paperwork were sent to prospective football players this week.

“We are going to change something up and pass out football equipment early this year instead of waiting until the first day,” he said.

Faith said equipment will be issued to seniors at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, July 25, one week before the start of practice. Juniors will follow on Tuesday, July 26, with sophomores on Wednesday, July 27, and freshmen on Thursday, July 28.

“If guys are working and can’t get there, coaches will be there throughout most of the day, and they can come later,” Faith said.
