Girls pick up 49-37 victory over Hamlin

The varsity Lady Lions are off to a slow start in the second half of the district race with an 0-2 record after losses to Hawley and Haskell.

However, the varsity girls picked up a win on Tuesday night in Hamlin, beating the Lady Pipers 49-37. Details will be reported next week.

Albany will host Cisco on Friday, Jan. 29, with the varsity girls taking the court in the main gym at 6:00 p.m.

Next Tuesday, the girls will be in Cisco, with the varsity tipping off at 6:00 p.m. in the main gym. 

The JV girls won both of their games last week, playing in May on Tuesday when the varsity had a bye.

The JV will play Cisco at 7:15 p.m. on Friday in the auxiliary gym.

Carrying an eight-point lead into the dressing room at the half, Albany let the Lady Bearcats from Hawley back in the game in the second half.

“We had a really good first half, building an 11-point lead at one point,” coach Tate Thompson said. “We let Hawley out-work us in the second half and chip their way back into the game and eventually get the win.”

Elia Hebel was named the offensive standout, while Avery Kleiner was picked for defense.

Scoring for the Lady Lions were Torie Fuentes 7, Brylee Moore 3, Alli Hill 9, Avery Kleiner 6, Traci Isbell 2, and Elia Hebel 15.

JV Results

The JV girls defeated May, 38-27, last Tuesday, Jan. 19.

“The girls played a great game in May last week,” coach M.J. Reneau said. “We set goals before the game to stay under control and run the floor. We accomplished both of those. I was proud of the way the girls came out in the second half to expand their lead.”

The coach said all players contributed to the win. She did name Kiana Roberson and Ashlyn Holson as offensive standouts, along with Callan Edgar and Robin Lucas on defense.

Scoring for the JV were Maci Hatchett 2, Brooklyn Abbate 3, Ashlyn Holson 11, Callan Edgar 2, Braylyn Abbate 4, Kiana Roberson 12, and Jaci Chapman 2.

The JV also picked up a district win last Friday, beating the visiting Hawley Lady Bearcats 39-34.

“The girls worked hard to earn the lead back in the second half,” Reneau said. “We had some great defensive plays that gave us the momentum in the fourth quarter. I loved the energy and hustle the girls showed in the game.”

She added that the team focused more on rebounds and limiting turnovers.

Offensive standouts were Kiana Roberson and Ashlyn Holson, while Callan Edgar and Brooklyn Abbate were tapped for defense.
