The Albany Lady Lions showed flashes of good play last week against playoff contenders as the District 10-2A girls basketball race nears the final stretch.

The Lady Lions (8-17 overall, 1-8 district) visited Haskell on Tuesday, Jan. 24, losing 59-32. Details will be reported next week. Albany hosts Hamlin at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27.

Following an open date on Tuesday, Jan. 31, the Lady Lions will have two games remaining – Friday, Feb. 3 at Stamford and Tuesday, Feb. 7 against Anson at home.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Lady Lions made the trip down Highway 6 to take on district leader Cisco, ranked No. 17 in the state at the time, falling 75-25. On Friday, Jan. 20, Albany lost 41-19 at home to Hawley.

Entering Tuesday’s games, Cisco and Stamford were tied for first place with Hawley in third place. Anson and Haskell were tied for fourth.

At Cisco, the Lady Lions had some productive stretches, but gave up too many big runs. The Lady Loboes took a 25-5 lead in the first quarter and upped the margin to 30 by halftime at 44-14.

Kiana Roberson led the Lady Lions with 16 points while Mimi Ivy added six.

Albany’s scoring woes continued against Hawley. Briley Tabor’s early game-tying 3-pointer was the Lady Lions’ only score of the first quarter as the Lady Bearcats went on a 10-0 run to end the period.

The margin grew to 13 points at halftime before Albany enjoyed its best stretch of play, an 8-2 run to start the third quarter that closed the gap to 24-17. Hawley then embarked on a 13-0 run, holding the Lady Lions scoreless for more than nine minutes.

Kiana Roberson scored nine points to lead Albany with Tabor adding five.
