Girls to face Stamford
The Albany Lady Lions made their first appearance in District 10-2A basketball competition last week, dropping a home game to Hawley in their only action.
The Lady Lions had the district bye Tuesday, Dec. 17, and return to action at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21. The game was pushed back from Friday, Dec. 20 because of Stamford’s participation in the Class 2A Division I state championship football game.
Saturday’s game will be Albany’s last until after Christmas. The Lady Lions will host Aspermont at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28. Albany resumes district play at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31 with a home game against Haskell.
On Tuesday, Dec. 10 against Hawley, another slow start hampered the Lady Lions, who trailed 20-6 after the first quarter.
“We need to start playing better in first quarters,,” Lady Lion coach Ashlyn Bevel said. “That’s really hurting us right now. We played really well in the second third and fourth quarters. I think if we can put it all together, that’ll help us in the long run and win some district games.”
Caroline Holson led Albany with nine points. Charlee Hefner added seven, all coming in the first half.
“Hawley is a good, solid team,” Bevel said. “They’ve got a lot of height and athleticism.”
Having an 11-day break between games, Albany was able to spend a lot of time on the practice floor.
“We worked on all of our scout stuff against Stamford this week and look to get a lot of shots up,” Bevel said. "We’re working as hard as we can. Stamford is probably a better matchup for us.”
