Girls even out league record at 2-2

The varsity Lady Lions won a pair of district games over the holiday break, boosting the team to 2-1 in District 10-2A action.

Albany traveled to Cisco on Tuesday, Jan. 5 as the first half of district play resumed following the Christmas break. The Lady Lions lost to the Lady Loboes 58-20 to even out their league record at 2-2.

Albany will host Anson on Friday, Jan. 8, with the varsity girls tipping off at 6:00 p.m. in the main gym. The JV girls will play in the auxiliary gym starting at 7:15 p.m.

Albany will be on the road to Stamford on Tuesday, Jan. 12 with the same start times.

Varsity Picks Up Wins

The varsity girls edged out Lady Bearcats, 45-40, in Hawley on Dec. 22.

“Hawley is always a tough place to play,” coach Tate Thompson said. “To go over there and get a district win is huge. I’m very proud of the girls for finding a way to win.”

Alli Hill was the offensive leader, while Elia Hebel was tapped for defense.

Scoring for Albany were Torie Fuentes 5, Brylee Moore 11, Cydney Nelson 3, Alli Hill 12, Briley Tabor 3, Tana Thompson 3, Traci Isbell 2, and Elia Hebel 6.

The Lady Lions returned to action on Saturday, Jan. 2, handing the Hamlin Lady Pipers a 51-23 loss in Albany.

The win improved the season record to 6-5.

“I was a little worried about us having intensity due to not playing or practicing much over the Christmas break,” the coach said. “However, the girls came out and played with intensity and hustled despite the break.”

Hebel was again the defensive standout, while Hill was picked for offense.

Scoring for Albany were Fuentes 8, Moore 10, Nelson 5, Hill 19, Tabor 3, and Isbell 6.

JV Girls Results

The JV girls split district games over the break, falling to Hawley 39-35 on Dec. 22.

“We had a slow start but tried our best to fight back,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “While we didn’t come away with a win, the girls showed a lot of heart to hold Hawley to just five points in the third period.”

The coach named Kiana Roberson as the offensive standout, scoring 17 points, including six of seven points from the free throw line.

Scoring for Albany were Brooklyn Abbate 2, Ashlyn Holson 5, Callan Edgar 5, Avery Kleiner 6, and Kiana Roberson 17.

The JV girls earned a 46-14 win over Hamlin last Saturday, improving their record to 6-1.

“The girls came out scoring on all cylinders against Hamlin,” Wilson said. “It was a great team effort, and they did a great job of making adjustments when needed.”

Roberson and Holson were named as offensive standouts, while Kleiner was picked for defense.

“Avery did a great job of getting steals at the top of the zone,” the coach said. “The teamwork the girls showed helped us come out on top.”
