Girls to end season against Stamford

The Lady Lion basketball team split games last week with district teams, with the regular season coming to an end on Friday.
Albany traveled to Anson on Tuesday, suffering a 69-34 loss to fall to 3-8 in district action.
The final game on the schedule pits the Lady Lions against the visiting Lady Bulldogs from Stamford on Friday. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. The JV game will follow at 7:15 p.m. in the auxiliary gym.
The varsity girls traveled to Hamlin on Jan. 22, bringing home a 49-37 win.
“We started out slow, but the girls did a great job of putting together a good second quarter to get us a lead going into halftime,” coach Tate Thompson. “I’m proud that they found a way to win.”
Alli Hill was named the offensive standout, while Lizzie Chavez was picked for defense.

Scoring for Albany were Torie Fuentes 9, Brylee Moore 4, Alli Hill 12, Briley Tabor 1, Avery Kleiner 1, Tana Thompson 6, Traci Isbell 3, Lizzie Chavez 7, and Elia Hebel 6.
The Lady Lions lost a home game to Cisco last Friday, 56-28.
“Our biggest goal was to come out and compete for the first three or four minutes to be able to stay in the game,” the coach said. “We let Cisco get out to an early lead, but we did fight back in the third quarter to give ourselves a chance.”
Alli Hill was the offensive player of the game for the Lady Lions, and Lizzie Chavez was named as defensive standout.

JV Split Games
The JV girls also won their game in Hamlin last week, 40-8.
“Our girls did a good job of running the floor and scoring off of fast breaks,” coach M.J. Reneau. “Our zone defense has improved so much over the last couple of weeks. The girls showed a lot of hustle and focus during the game.”
The coach named Kiana Roberson and Ashlyn Holson as offensive standouts, along with Robin Lucas and Jaci Chapman as defensive players of the game.

Scoring were Maci Hatchett 2, Robin Lucas 6, Ashlyn Holson 15, Sidney Russell 2, Callan Edgar 1, and Kiana Roberson 14.
The JV was edged out by Cisco 33-31 last Friday.
“We started off strong in the first half, but we couldn’t hold on to the lead in the fourth,” the coach said. “This was a challenging, fast-paced game, and the girls handled the pressure well,”
Offensive standouts were Kiana Robertson and Ashlyn Holson. Callan Edgar, Brooklyn Abbate, and Robin Lucas were picked for defense.
“We got into foul trouble in the second half, allowing them 19 free throw attempts,” Reneau said. “I am still very proud of the the girls’ efforts because we showed so much improvement from the last time we played them.”
