The Albany Lady Lions basketball team dropped its second outing of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 23, losing 54-26 at Comanche before taking off for Thanksgiving.

Albany (0-2) played Tuesday at Ballinger. Details will be reported next week.

The Lady Lion will make their first tournament appearance of the season Thursday through Saturday at Breckenridge.

Against Comanche, Kiana Roberson scored 12 points to lead the local girls, who played less than 24 hours after opening their season against Ballinger.

Coach Tate Thompson said the Lady Lions are still in the process of shaking off the dust and getting in basketball shape.

“All we are focusing on right now is making progress and taking steps forward,” he said. “All the teams that we are and will be playing have been in basketball for two weeks, some more than that. We just need lots of games right now.”

Comanche built a 10-1 lead in the first quarter and was ahead 26-13 at halftime. The Maidens outscored the Lady Lions 28-13 in the second half.

Briley Tabor, Ashlyn Holson, and Lizzie Chavez each scored four points for Albany. Callan Edgar scored two points.

After Tuesday’s game at Ballinger. the Lady Lions will play four times in three days at the Breckenridge tournament.

“There’s no way to simulate game shape but to play games,” Thompson said. “We’re still rusty and dribbling the ball off our feet, but as long as we can use this to get in shape and knock the rust off, that’s what we’re trying to accomplish.”

Albany opens District 10-2A play Dec. 14 at home against Haskell. Thompson is hopeful the early games will have his team prepared.

“We always set foot on the floor to win, but our biggest deal is perspective right now,” he said. “We need to be sure when we play Haskell that we’re at our best. We need games right now.”

JV Boys

While the Lions varsity season remains on hold, Albany’s JV faces a busy weekend with the Albany JV tournament.

The tourney will feature 16 teams from 11 schools playing 32 games over two days in two gyms. Games will be played Thursday and Saturday with morning and afternoon sessions each day.

Albany is one of five schools with two teams entered, joining Breckenridge, Graham, Stamford, and Jim Ned. Other participating schools are Munday, Woodson, Anson, Cross Plains, Sweetwater, and Hawley.

“With us still being in football, having two teams is quite a surprise,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “I’ve got 18 kids right now who are not playing varsity football. Nine of them are suit up for the playoffs, but they can still play JV basketball games.”

On Thursday, Albany’s JV team will play Munday at 9:00 a.m. and Breckenridge at 11:20 a.m. On Saturday the Lions will play Graham at 1:40 p.m, and Anson at 4:00 p.m.

Albany’s freshman team will play immediately following the JV each time. On Thursday, the freshmen will play Woodson at 10:10 a.m. and Breckenridge at 12:30 p.m. Saturday’s schedule has the Lions taking on Graham at 2:50 p.m. and Cross Plains at 5:10 p.m.

“It will help us with conditioning, just getting on the floor and getting the ball in our hands,” Peacock said. “These guys are in pretty decent shape, and we’ll have enough subs. Just getting up and down the floor is a good way to practice and learn.”
