Girls to be back on field April 2

Cross Plains Tuesday

The Albany Lady Lions will resume their softball season at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 2 with Cross Plains visiting Webb Park.

The Lady Lions (6-1) haven’t played since defeating Sweetwater JV 10-1 on Tuesday, Feb. 27, because of a lack of players. In resuming the schedule, Albany will be able to play the second half of the District 8-2A schedule.

“We’re ready to get back to it,” coach Jimmy Fuentes said.

Fuentes announced that a game at Abilene TLCA has been moved to Tuesday, April 9, which was originally an open date.

During the recent hiatus, the Lady Lions continued practicing.

“Wekeptpracticesasshortas possible,”Fuentessaid.“There’s only so much you can do and we didn’t want to overdo it.”

Fuentes said resuming play will give his young team a chance to improve faster than just practicing.

“Especially with pitching and recognizing certain situations, you get better by playing,” he said. “We’re tired of practicing. It’s time to play some games.”

Because Albany and Cisco are the only Class 2A schools in the district, the Lady Lions are assured of a playoff berth.

“We need to get going again and build some momentum,” Fuentes said. “It’s time to start getting ready for the playoffs.”

Albany will play six games the rest of the regular season. Home games will include Baird on Friday, April 5 and Cisco on Tuesday, April 16. Other road games will be Friday, April 12 at Eula and Friday, April 19 at Gorman. All games are scheduled for 5:00 p.m. starts.
