The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team has some holes to fill after advancing to the Region II-2A tournament last year, but there are also some key pieces in place to build around for 2022.

After four days of practice, the Lady Lions will scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 6. On Friday, the varsity will take on Benjamin at 11:00 a.m. and Breckenridge at noon in the Albany gym.

On Saturday, Albany will travel to Breckenridge with the JV2 facing Breckenridge at 10:00 a.m., followed by the varsity and JV1 taking on Breckenridge at 11:00 a.m. and Paradise at noon.

The Lady Lions open the regular season Tuesday, Aug. 9 against Breckenridge at home before hosting the Albany Summer Slam tournament Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 11-13.

Coach M.J. Reneau welcomed 24 players for the start of preseason workouts Monday, Aug. 1.

“The girls really took a lot of initiative Monday,” Reneau said. “It seems like they stayed in pretty good shape over the summer because they did really well with our strength and conditioning.”

The number allows Reneau to again field a varsity and two junior varsity teams, but each squad will require players to be versatile.

“Everyone will get a lot of playing time,” Reneau said. “Every girl took part in every drill, and they’re working on all skills.”

Returning from the 2021 varsity are senior Gracie Price and juniors Kiana Roberson and Robin Lucas. Among the positions left open by graduation are middle blocker, outside hitter, and setter.

“We have girls who are ready to step in and take over those positions,” Reneau said. “They’ve known since last year that spots were going to be open, and we’ve been preparing for awhile.”

Reneau said the players took the floor Monday ready to get to work.

“We have good habits,” she said. “We’re talking to each other, trying to get that chemistry on the court. We’ve got several scrimmages this week to get us going well.”
