Game cancellations create headaches

Scheduling conflicts have created several changes to the Moran high school and junior high basketball schedules in addition to creating a like number of headaches for athletic director John Hughes.

Tuesday’s scheduled varsity home games against Three Way were cancelled because Three Way had double booked and played a different opponent.

The varsity boys were able to pick up a home game against Gorman, but Hughes, also the varsity girls coach, had other issues to handle. The Woodson tournament scheduled for this weekend dropped its girls division, and Paint Creek pulled out of a girls’ game scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 7 at Moran.

The Lady Bulldogs, who last played on Nov. 22, were able to avoid a 17-day gap between games by filling a spot in this weekend’s Breckenridge tournament.

“We had to find games,” Hughes said. “Right now, we’re working on something for Tuesday that we’re waiting to hear about. We’re either going to play Hermleigh or go to play Vernon Northside.”

Moran boys and girls teams are entered in the Lueders-Avoca tournament, which starts Thursday, Dec. 9.

Junior High

The Moran Junior High girls team lost 20-15 at home against Cross Plains on Monday.

Ashlyn Crawford, Leanna Sikes, and Kacenda Thompkins each scored four points for Moran. Cassandra Mendez added three points.

Cross Plains led 6-2 after one quarter and 10-4 at halftime. Moran cut into the lead with a 6-4 advantage in the third quarter.

The junior high girls’ home game against Eula on Monday, Dec. 6, has been changed to 5:00 p.m. at Eula to allow Moran players to attend the Area IV FFA banquet in Abilene.
