Football season ends prematurely with forfeit by Trent

The Moran football season ended earlier than anticipated last week due to last Friday’s 66-80 loss on the road to Loraine ending the varsity’s playoff hopes, and a forfeit by Trent cancelling what had been scheduled as the Bulldogs’ final regular season game and senior night at Bulldog Stadium this Friday.

In addition, the junior high game that is on the calendar for this evening in Trent has been cancelled because the junior high Bulldogs picked up a game with Trent middle school on Oct. 18.

Loraine Results

“We lost a tough football game at Loraine,” said head coach Harley Ethridge. “The score was 20-27 at the half.”

By the end of the fourth quarter Moran had put a total of 66 points on the scoreboard, but Loraine had 14 more for 80 points and the win.

Ethridge said that several of his players had outstanding stats in spite of the loss.

“Freshman Braden Crow threw for 315 yards and five touchdowns,” said the coach. “He also ran in a TD. On defense, Braden had six tackles and made one interception.”

Senior Kobee Lapp had 190 receiving yards, including three touchdown catches, and scored on a 60-yard run, while freshman Lyric Huskey had 91 yards passing and scored on a 27-yard run.

Also scoring for Moran were junior Jonas Cadena-Sotelo with 41 yards rushing including two TDs, senior Jesse Hawley with one receiving TD, and junior Harley Schafer with 68 rushing yards and one touchdown.

“Freshman Arren Hawley had a 23-yard pass reception, three tackles, and a successful PAT,” the coach said. “On defense, Kobee was credited with five tackles and an interception, and Lyric had five tackles at the sic’em position. Jonas and Harley also had four tackles each, while senior Curry Pendleton had six tackles and a sack while playing defensive sic’em.”

The Moran varsity football team ended up third in District 6-A, with a 1-2 record in district, and an overall record of 5-5, including two games won on forfeits.

Blackwell and Loraine will face each other tomorrow to determine the district champion and runner-up, with undefeated Blackwell the heavy favorite headed into the game.

Results of last week’s junior high football game, moved from Thursday, Nov. 1, in Moran to Friday, Nov. 2, at 5:30 p.m. in Loraine, were not known as of press time.
