High school cross country runners continue to work out in the mornings in preparation for the season, with practices moving to 6:30 a.m. with the start of school on Thursday.

Coach Tate Thompson said that he only has four girls and one boy consistently showing up for workouts at the high school level. He originally thought he would have twice that number of girls, but injuries and participation in other sports have thinned the numbers down.

“None of the girls are returning from last year, and we only have one runner on the boys side,” he said. “I am expecting several junior high students to join when classes start.”

Runners in seventh and eighth grade are not allowed to practice until the first day of school.

The season will open Tuesday, Sept. 3 at Eula, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
