The varsity Lady Lions split games on the road last week, and suffered a second loss this week to put their record at 3-2.

The girls were on the road Monday, losing to Ballinger 47-37. Due to an early deadline, details from the game will be reported next week.

Albany also hosted Munday on Tuesday before taking a break for the Thanksgiving holiday, but results were not available at press time.

Both the varsity and JV teams are scheduled to be on the road to Hamlin next Tuesday for a set of games starting at 4:00 p.m.

The varsity squad dropped their first game of the new season on Saturday in Snyder to the Lady Tigers, 41-40.

“Snyder is two classifications larger than we are, so we knew we would have our hands full,” girls head coach Tate Thompson said. “We went into halftime with a seven-point lead, but I think our girls just ran out of gas.”

The coach also said that the team was working shorthanded with a couple of players missing and some still healing from injuries.

“Our girls were having to play out of position, so I was very proud that the girls still gave us a chance to win,” said Thompson.

The coach named Cydney Nelson as the offensive standout, along with Alli Hill on defense.

Snyder 4 14 16 7 - 41

Scoring for Albany were Nelson 11, Hill 10, Torie Fuentes 8, Jaleigh Morales 7, and Jillian Guinn 4.

Earlier in the week, the Lady Lions traveled to Abilene Christian High School where they posted a 50-30 win.

“We started out a little slow, but finally started to get rolling later on,” the coach said. “We are wanting to make progress with each game, and I feel we have done that.”

The coach said he is again putting a young team on the floor this season.

“Right now the best thing for us is playing as many games as we can and gaining experience,” he said.

Morales was tapped as offensive standout, while Fuentes was selected for defense.

ACHS 3 11 6 10 - 30

Scoring for Albany were Morales 15, Hill 13, Elia Hebel 8, Fuentes 6, Guinn 4, Sarah Cotter 4, and Nelson 1.

JV Also Splits Games

The JV defeated ACHS 30-24 on Nov. 13.

“Overall, the girls did a great job defensively to help shut down ACHS when they started making small runs,” coach Richard Sullivan said.

Offensive standouts were Traci Isbell, Tana Thompson, and Ansleigh Garcia. The coach named Sarah Cotter, Elizabeth Chavez, and Ana Balliew on defense.

Scoring were Isbell 6, Sara Smith 5, Thompson 6, Chavez 2, Cotter 3, Amber Leverton 2, and Garcia 6.

The JV lost in Snyder on Saturday, 41-37.

“Although they didn’t come out with a win, the girls did a fantasic job of fighting back late in the fourth to force overtime,” the coach said. “We were playing with low numbers, but still came close to pulling out the victory against a much larger opponent.”

Standouts were Smith, Isbell, and Garcia on offense. On defense were Chavez, Leverton, and Balliew.

Scoring were Isbell 16, Smith 6, Chavez 6, Balliew 4, and Garcia 5.
