The Albany High School tennis team won four division brackets and added three other top-three finishes March 21 at the Brownwood tournament in its final outing before district.

The District 10-2A tournament will be played Thursday, March 30 (today) and Friday, March 31 at Abilene. Albany has the top seed in each draw.

At Brownwood, Sidney Russell won girls singles, Jaci Chapman and Ella Webb won girls doubles, and Cade Fairchild and London Fuentes won boys doubles. In the B division, Mimi Ivy and Brooklyn Abbate won the girls doubles draw.

In mixed doubles, Abi Hale and Jake Hale finished second while Robyn Trail and Woods Peterson finished third. The girls doubles pair of Chloe Daugherty and Caroline Chapman also finished third.

At the district tournament, Russell will be the top seed in girls singles with Luke Marshall No. 1 in boys singles. Jaci Chapman and Webb are the favorites in girls doubles with Fuentes and Cason Fairchild, who skipped the Brownwood tournament because of baseball, heading the list in boys doubles. The Hales are the No. 1 mixed doubles seed.

The top two finishers in each draw at district advance to the Region II-2A tournament Monday-Tuesday, April 10-11, at Richland Tennis Center in North Richland Hills. In cases where the loser of a championship match has not played the winner of the third-place match, a playback will be held to determine who advances.

“We’re feeling good about district,” coach M.J. Reneau said. “We want to take as many as we can to regional.”

The first two rounds will be played today at Rose Park Tennis Center with championship, third place, and any playback matches scheduled for Friday.

“However, if there’s a conflict with our FCCLA event, which involves about seven of our kids, we’ll go ahead and play the finals on Thursday,” Reneau said. “If one of my FCCLA people is in a playback, we’ll play that on Monday or Tuesday (April 3-4). It’s crazy.”

Such a scenario would push matches right up to the district certification deadline of Wednesday, April 5.
