The Albany Lady Lions won their only outing of last week on Tuesday Oct. 12, defeating Newcastle 25-17, 25-16, 25-14 on the road in District 6-2A volleyball action before enjoying an open date on Saturday.

Albany played Hawley at home on Tuesday, winning a hard-fought three-set match 25-14, 31-29, 25-18 to secure the first place spot in district. Details from Tuesday night’s game will be reported next week, but the win keeps the girls undefeated in district and gives them undisputed claim to the district championship.

The Lady Lions improved to 28-3 overall with the victory.

On Saturday, the Lady Lions will host Hico in a nondistrict match. Albany will wrap up the regular season with senior night on Tuesday at home against Strawn, one of the 1A teams in District 6. Then they will visit Tolar on Saturday, Oct. 30 in a playoff warmup match.

The playoffs begin Nov. 1-2 with bi-district matches. Albany will have a bye through the first round. Instead, the Lady Lions will play a second warmup match against Blum at 5:00 p.m. Nov. 1 at Dublin.

The area round will be played between Nov. 4 and 6.

“I thought we played very smart offense and defense,” Lady Lions coach M.J. Reneau said. “The hitters saw the court well and were able to place the ball.”
