The junior high Cubs picked up a pair of victories last Thursday in Cross Plains.  The teams will play at home Thursday (today), hosting the Haskell Indians. The seventh grade will take the field at 4:00 p.m., with the eighth grade following at about 5:15 p.m.  The eighth grade Cubs took their game to the wire in Cross Plains, holding the Buffaloes out of the end zone as time ended to preserve a 20-14 win.  Tye Edgar ran in a Cross Plains fumble to open the scoring, running the ball 50 yards for the tally. The conversion attempt failed.

Caden Price got the next touchdown for the Cubs on a five-yard run. London Fuentes hit Price with the two-point pass for a 14-6 lead.

Price passed to Fuentes the next time around on a 30-yard pass play for a tally. The PAT failed.  The Buffs scored again to make the final 20-14.  Offensive standouts named by the coach were Price, Fuentes, and Coy Knight. On defense, he named Price, Edgar, and Cameron Nelson.

The seventh grade Cubs earned a 30-12 win in Cross Plains.  Albany’s Bryson Herring picked off a Buffalo pass on the opening drive and returned it 55 yards to set up the first score. Cason Fairchild ran the ball 14 yards for the score, then Fairchild passed the ball to Herring for the two-pointer.  The Buffs scored on their next series to bring the score to 8-6, but the Cubs took the ball back and drove to the goal again. Lanxton Viertel ran the ball the final two yards for the score, with Adam Hill carrying in the two-point play for a 16-6 lead.

The Cubs ate up the entire third quarter, scoring early in the fourth on another two-yard carry by Viertel. Fairchild hit Hill with the conversion pass to go up 24-6.  Following another Cross Plains touchdown in the fourth, the Cubs scored on a two-yard run by Hill for the tally. The two-point attempt failed.  “We did a good job on offense overall,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “We passed well when we needed to, but we were able to get a lot out of our running game.”  The coach said the defense had to adjust to a strong running back.

“We hadn’t played against a kid with his speed and it took us a while to adjust to it,” the coach said. “Another big moment came after we went up 24-6 and Monte Naylor came in to kick for us. He has been working constantly during practice and has become a very good kicker.”
