The eighth grade earned a 28-6 win in Roscoe.

The Cubs held the Plowboys on the first drive, followed by a 48-yard run by Lanxton Viertel for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

Following a second defensive stand, the Cubs scored again on the first play of a series on a 52-yard carry by Adam Hill for a tally. Quarterback Lute Wheeler found Viertel in the end zone for the two-point play to give the team a 14-0 lead at the half.

The Cubs took the opening possession of the second half down the field for a third score. Wheeler connected with Hill on a 25-yard pass play for the score.

Viertel broke away for a 20-yard touchdown carry in the fourth quarter, which was followed by a two-point pass from Wheeler to Tyler Chapman.

“Our offensive line set the tone for the game early,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “We had great momentum up front and our backs did a good job of finishing. Wheeler made some big throws at crucial times when they started putting everyone up front to stop our run.”

The coach commended the offense for keeping a good balance of running and passing the ball.

On defense, the coach said that the Cubs were faced with more passing than they have seen so far this season.

“It was a great opportunity for us to work on our coverage,” the coach said. “We gave up some plays but made adjustments to come up with some big pass break-ups late to keep them from scoring.”

The seventh grade Cubs fell 28-16 in Roscoe last week.

Albany trailed 16-0 at the end of the first period before the Cubs took their first offensive possession down the field to score. The tally came on a three-yard run by Ethan Green, followed by a two-point conversion pass from Branson Beal to Green.

The Cubs scored again in the second quarter on a run by Andre Gjerpe, with Green catching another two-point pass from Beal for the PAT.

“We moved the ball well in the air and on the ground,” the coach said. “We only had four offensive series, and we scored on two of those.”

The coach commended the backs for running the ball well, along with the passing game which helped set up the scores.

“Defensively, we did a good job on first and second down, but allowed their quarterback to pick up some big plays on third down,” Peacock said.
