The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams both pitched shutouts in their outings Thursday, Sept. 7, at Seymour.
The Cubs make their first home appearance of the season Thursday (today), when Hawley visits Nail Stadium. Action begins at 4:30 p.m. with the seventh grade game.
At Seymour, the seventh grade won 24-0 in an outing that lasted just two quarters. The eighth grade, playing a full game, won 36-0.
Coach Ryder Peacock lauded the defensive efforts of both teams.
“We tackled well and didn’t give up any points in either portion of the games,” he said. “We did a good job of getting a lot of guys to the ball. We definitely took a step forward as you can see guys are starting to get comfortable with the contact.”
In the seventh grade game, Lyle Wheeler and Blake Britting accounted for the scoring. Wheeler started with a 25-yard touchdown run and Britting followed with another 25-yard run. Britting then scored on a 30-yard pass from Wheeler, who ran for the conversion after each TD.
In the eighth grade game, Jakobi Roberson scored three times, while Clay Chapman ran for one touchdown and passed for another.
Roberson opened the scoring with a 74-yard kickoff return and followed with a 42-yard scoring run. Chapman hit Graham Ceder for the conversion following the second score.
Chapman then raced 52 yards for his rushing TD. Wheeler passed to Slayton Parsons for the conversion.
After Roberson tacked on a 43-yard run to make it 28-0, Parsons pulled in a 19-yard pass from Chapman. Wheeler again passed for the conversion, this time to Sam Tidwell.
Parents of junior high football players are reminded that individual and team pictures will be taken today (Sept. 14) starting at 3:45 p.m.
Players should have brought payment slips home, but even if they haven’t seen those, parents can bring payment to the Albany News or to the end zone while pictures are being taken.
