Both Albany Cubs basketball teams won two out of three games at the Breckenridge tournament last Saturday, then they split games with the Abilene Hawks on Monday.

The Cubs will be off for the Christmas break until Jan. 10 when they will host Hawley.

The seventh grade boys lost the first round at Breckenridge to Eastland, 25-21.

“It was a good game, but we missed several lay-ups,” coach David Fair-child said. “The guys played good defense.”

Scoring were Houston Heatly 8, Adam Hill 10, and Lanxton Viertel 3.

Albany came up on the winning side of a 26-22 game against Millsap in the second round.

Scoring were Hill 9, Lute Wheeler 7, Heatly 4, Cason Fairchild 3, and Bryson Herring 2.

The Cubs beat the home team 30-29 in the third game of the day.

“Beating Breckenridge was a big win for us,” Fairchild said.

Scoring in the game were Hill 21, Viertel 4, Herring 2, Fairchild 2, and Heatly 1.

The seventh graders also defeated the Abilene Hawks on Monday at home, 32-23.

Scoring were Hill 25, Heatly 5, and Wheeler 2.

“It was a good weekend of basketball for the kids, and they all played hard,” the coach said.

The eighth grade team also won two of three at Breckenridge, picking up a 38-16 victory over Eastland in the first round.

The Cubs moved on to defeat Millsap 36-15 in the second game, but lost the third round to Breckenridge 35-21.

Scoring totals from the tournament were London Fuentes 32, Caden Price 32, and Cole Chapman 31.

The Cubs lost to the Hawks on Monday, 43-36.

Scoring were Fuentes 20, Price 9, and Chapman 7.

“We were a little up and down over these four games,” coach Jimmy Fuentes said. “The teams we seem to have trouble with are the ones that run a pressure defense that forces us to work the ball down the court. That is something we will have to work on.”

He added that the Cubs did show that they are able to run their offense well.

“We showed pretty good ability to execute our offense and put points on the board at times, along with scoring off of turnovers on defense,” the coach said.
