Cubs pick up wins over Roscoe

The Albany Cubs picked up a pair of victories last Thursday over Roscoe, both winning games at Robert Nail Stadium by a score of 28-0.

Both teams will be off this week, along with the varsity team. The JV Lions will play the lone game on Thursday starting at 5:00 p.m. against the visiting Winters JV.

The eighth grade Cubs blanked Roscoe despite injuries and ailments, according to coach Richard Sullivan.

“The guys put on an impressive showing on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball,” he said. “With a bye week ahead, we hopefully will have some of those nagging injuries subside as we prepare for the following week.”

Caden Price had a hand in scoring three out of the four touchdowns for the Cubs, opening with a 10-yard run to the end zone. Quarterback London Fuentes hit Price with a two-point pass.

Price scored the second touchdown on a 35-yard run, and Fuentes followed with a conversion pass to Keatin Russell.

Fuentes passed to Isaiah Carrillo with a three-yard pass for the third tally. The try for two points failed.

The final touchdown came on a 35-yard pass from Price to Fuentes to put up a 28-0 final score. The two-point attempt failed.

Fuentes was credited with two interceptions in the game, while Price grabbed one. Samuel Rosas had a fumble recovery.

Defensive standouts named by the coach were Fuentes, Price, and Rosas. On the offensive side, the coach picked Cameron Nelson, Russell, and Price.

The seventh grade Cubs also won with a 28-0 score.

The team got on the board with a 40-yard touchdown run by Adam Hill in the first quarter. Quarterback Cason Fairchild passed to Lanxton Viertel for the two-pointer.

The Cubs capitalized on the second of two blocked punts, setting up another score by Hill on a two-yard run to push the lead to 14-0. The two-point attempt failed.

Hill picked off a Winters pass on the next possession to set up another score. After a long run by Hill, Fairchild passed to Houston Heatly for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Fairchild hit J.J. Clark on the two-pointer to give the Cubs a 22-0 lead at the half.

The Cubs depended more on the run in the second half, taking the ball 65 yard to eat up most of the third period. Viertel got the call for the final two yards for the tally, bumping the lead to 28-0.

Heatly recovered a loose Roscoe football to seal the win and retain the shutout.

“The Cubs had strong performances on both the run and the pass,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “We were able to move the ball in various ways, which was nice to see this week. We had been struggling getting our timing down on our passing game, but we spent a lot of time throwing in practice and it paid off.”

The coach said that the front four on defense played a good game.

“The front guys did a good job of stuffing the run,” Peacock said. “Roscoe had to throw the majority of the game and our secondary guys did a good job of finding the routes and keeping Roscoe off the scoreboard.”
