The two junior high teams opened the 2019 season on the road with victories last week in Dublin.

The eighth grade Cubs racked up a 22-0 win, while the seventh Cubs won 30-0.

Both teams will travel to Eastland on Thursday (today) for games starting at 5:00 p.m.

The eighth grade Cubs took a 6-0 lead to the locker room at the half, thanks to a three-yard score by Cason Fairchild. The PAT failed.

In the third quarter, Lanxton Viertel ran 41 yards for a TD. Fairchild passed to Adam Hill for the two-point play to boost the lead to 14-0.

Hill scored on a five-yard run in the fourth to put the Cubs up 20-0. The PAT failed.

The final two points in the game came on a safety when Zane Waggoner tackled a Dublin back in the end zone.

“We still have some things to work on offensively,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “I challenged the guys at the half to run the football, and they responded well.”

The coach said he was happy with the progress the team is making, especially with the limited amount of practice time.

“Adam Hill and Lute Wheeler both made big catches for us in the game,” Peacock said.

The coach said that the Cubs allowed only one first down on the defensive side.

“We came up with some interceptions and a safety on defense,” the coach said.

Defensive standouts were Cort Peterson, Waggoner, and Bryson Herring.

The seventh grade shut out Dublin 30-0.

Albany scored on a four-yard run by Dalton Richards, followed by a two-point pass from Branson Beal to Andre Gjerpe.

The next score was set up by a fumble recovered by Laithe Leech. Ashton Bailey ran in the touchdown from 20 yards out. The two-point attempt failed.

Gjerpe recovered another Dublin fumble, giving Ty Richards a 75-yard scoring run. Gjerpe scored the two pointer to give the Cubs a 22-0 lead at the half.

Richards ended the half with an interception.

Gjerpe scored the lone second-half tally on a 24-yard run. Bailey ran in the two-point play to end the scoring at 30-0.

Richards had a second interception in the fourth quarter.

“I thought we played well for our first outing,” coach David Fairchild said. “We did a lot of good things, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.”
