Cubs, Lady Cubs lose to tough Cisco teams

The Albany Cubs and Lady Cubs basketball teams returned from a month-long holiday break Thursday, Jan. 12, with games against Cisco before the girls hosted a one-day tournament on Saturday, Jan. 14.

The teams have another Thursday date on Jan. 19 (tonight) against Hawley, with the girls on the road and the boys at home. Games at both locations start at 5:30 p.m.

Last week, the boys teams hosted Cisco with the girls on the road.

GIRLS

Red Team

The girls Red team dropped their four games for the week, losing 48-13 to Cisco. In the tournament, Albany lost 20-9 against Eastland, 34-16 against Gordon, and 28-15 against Sweetwater.

At Cisco,  Charlee Hefner scored five points with Ashlyn Miller adding four. Tatum Grady and Zayne Lefevre each scored two points.

Against Eastland, Hefner scored four points, with Lefevre adding three and Grady two.

Against Gordon, ­Lefevre led the Lady Cubs with five points. Hefner scored four.  Brooke Richards added three, while Miller and Grady scored two apiece.

Against Sweetwater, Lefevre had eight points, followed by Grady with three and Miller and Hefner with two apiece.

White Team

The Lady Cubs White team went 1-3 for the week, losing 38-6 to Cisco before beating Abilene TLCA 26-3 to open the tournament. The Lady Cubs then lost 45-17 to Sweetwater and 23-10 to Eastland.

At Cisco, Finlee Brown scored four points and  Kamryn Graham had two.

“The girls played hard and were able to run our offense and press break well,” White team coach M.J. Reneau said. “We had a few injuries in the game that hurt us, and we are still trying to get back to basketball shape after the long break.”

Against TLCA, Brown scored 12 points, and Charli Trail added nine. Leah Glick and J’Cee Keen each had two points, and Tara Cauble scored one.

Against Sweetwater, Trail scored 10 points, with Brown adding five and Cauble two.

Trail scored all 10 points against Eastland.

“The girls played hard, and I’m proud of them,” Reneau said. “Even though they were exhausted, they still tried to run the offenses right, and they never slowed down on defense. We started the day with a win, which was great.”

BOYS

Eighth Grade

The eighth grade Cubs suffered a 32-17 loss to Cisco, scoring nearly half their points in the first quarter.

Colter Edgar led Albany with seven points, and Zane Green added six. Wesley Gleitz and Jack Nail each scored two points.

Seventh Grade

The seventh grade Cubs suffered their first loss of the season, falling 26-22 to Cisco after leading by eight in the first half.

Aiden Vickers had 10 points, while Clay Chapman and Bennett Neece each scored five. Jakobi Roberson scored two points.

Combo Team

The Cubs’ combo team lost to Cisco 18-3.

Judson Rodgers scored two points, and Shooter Shoaf had one for Albany.
