Albany Junior/Senior High athletes begin preparations for 2023 fall sports as the school’s summer conditioning program gets underway on Monday, June 12.

The program is open to all incoming seventh through 12th graders who plan to participate in interscholastic sports.

Summer workouts are subject to UIL regulations.

Boys sessions will be held Monday through Thursday each week through July 20. Workouts will be from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. each day and include weight lifting, agility drills and conditioning.

Albany head football coach Denney Faith said the schedule works around July 4, which falls on a Tuesday this year, and the THSCA convention.

“We’ll give the guys a week or so off before we start two-a-days,” Faith said. “We’ll go about six weeks. Coaching school is July 15-17 and we’ll go to that.”

Faith said a schedule for skill workouts, typically held twice a week, will be announced later.

The girls program will run five weeks with a two-week break the first half of July, resuming July 17 and concluding July 27. Workouts will be 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. each day.

Sport-specific instruction for girls will be held 9:00 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Mondays for high school athletes and Tuesday’s for junior high athletes.

Albany volleyball coach M.J. Reneau said she is making one change to the summer program this year.

“Instead of a team camp for volleyball, I’ve entered us in a tournament July 21-22 at the AYSA in Abilene,” she said.

Preseason practice for high school football and volleyball will begin Monday, July 31. Junior high sports cannot hold practice until school starts.
