After getting an unexpected weekend off and struggling through last Friday’s game, the Moran Bulldogs hope to get things on track with their scheduled open date this week.

The Bulldogs’ open District 9-1A Division II play Oct. 8 at Paint Creek.

“It’s going to be good for us,” Bulldogs coach John Hughes said of the bye. “It gives us two weeks to get ready for Paint Creek. Just getting a little bit healthier than we have been is going to be the big thing.”

Moran was forced to cancel its Sept. 17 game against Mullin because illness left the team without enough players. Last week, the Bulldogs lost to Lingleville 48-0.

“We’re still kind of dragging,” Hughes said. “We dragged a little bit last week.”

Hughes has scheduled two full-pad workouts this week with more weight training and conditioning during the athletic period.

“We’re going to look at fine tuning a couple of things and keep improving wherever we can,” he said.

Against Lingleville, Moran (0-4) was held to 15 total yards and lost five turnovers.

Arren Hawley rushed for 18 yards and caught a pass for 11 yards. Connor Hail rushed for 13 yards.

Hail, Hawley, Riley Noble, and Keagan Kilcrease were each in on two tackles. Cotten Campbell intercepted a pass.

“I think we handled it as well as we could,” Hughes said. “One player who had been out sick made it back for the game, but he wasn’t at 100 percent. No matter what, though, we’ll just keep going. That’s the thing about these kids.”
