Bulldogs to scrimmage Friday

Though shorthanded, the Moran Bulldogs football team had a productive outing Saturday in its scrimmage against Trent.

With just five players available, the Bulldogs managed to outscore the Gorillas 6-3 at Bulldog Field.

“I was pretty well pleased with our scrimmage,” Moran coach John Hughes said. “I only had five guys, but Trent was rotating a couple of guys in with my guys so they could get some extra work in.”

The scrimmage pinpointed some areas that need work, but Hughes was pleased with the overall effort.

With low numbers, getting through the scrimmage injury-free was a must for the Bulldogs.

“Everybody’s healthy,” Hughes said. “That’s the big thing.”

Hughes said not having a full lineup available leaves the Bulldogs with some ground to make up.

“We’re probably just a little bit behind, but all in all, we’re doing well right now,” he said.

Hughes said the focus this week was on getting into the routine the team will employ for game weeks.

“We’re going to start doing the things we’d normally do it on a Friday night,” he said. “We’ll have our little wristbands that the guys will be wearing. I won’t have to be in the huddle calling plays. I’ll just signal stuff in and they’ll go from that.”

On Friday, the Bulldogs will travel to Gustine for their second scrimmage, a three-way event with Gustine and Buckholts.

“It gives you a chance to see someone else’s best players,” Hughes said of the three-team format. “My six are going to face the best from everybody no matter what. It’s different looks, different approaches from different people.”

The Bulldogs open the season Aug. 27 at Benjamin.
