Bulldogs to host Hornets

The Moran Bulldogs stumbled in their second outing of the football season Friday, Sept. 1, falling 54-6 at Baird.
The Bulldogs (1-1) return to action Friday, Sept. 8, when Aspermont visits Bulldog Field.
At Baird, two early turnovers put Moran in a hole it couldn’t get out of.
“The biggest problem is we were down 14-0 in, like, 90 seconds,” Moran coach John Hughes said. “Baird kicked off to us twice, and we fumbled both kickoffs. If you take away that 14 points, it could have been 14-6 going into halftime, and we’re in the game.”
Instead, Moran trailed 22-0 before Ellis Hise scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter.
Hise rushed for 44 yards, caught a pass for 14 yards and had a 26-yard completion as Moran totaled 99 yards. Garrett Hamilton passed for 29 yards, and Caleb York had two receptions for 41 yards.
Landon Moreno led the defense with eight tackles and Zech Henderson had seven. Ethan Boykin, Cotten Campbell, York, and Hise each had six.
After Hise’s score, Baird answered just before halftime to lead 28-6. A interception return for a touchdown sparked a 26-point third quarter for the Bears (2-0) to end the game.
“They were able to rotate people in and we weren’t,” Hughes said. “We played as hard as we could, and that’s all you can ask.”

The Moran Lady Bulldogs showed some flashes in their only outing last week, but were denied an opportunity to build on them.
Moran played Tuesday, Sept. 5 at Woodson. Results will be reported next week.
On Tuesday, Aug. 39, Moran lost at Gustine 11-25, 23-25, 15-25. A weekend match at Trent was rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23 at Moran as neither team had enough players.
Coach Jo Hise said the second set at Gustine was one of the best of the season for her team.
“We knew where each person was and who wanted the ball,” she said.
