Bulldogs fall to #5 Blackwell

The kickoff for the Moran vs. Blackwell game last Friday was delayed for almost an hour after the Moran bus broke down during the road trip, leaving the Bulldogs waiting on the side of the highway for a replacement vehicle.

The ’Dawgs didn’t fare much better after the starting whistle finally opened the game against the undefeated Hornets at 8:15 p.m.

Blackwell swarmed their way to a 50-0 victory in two quarters, dropping Moran to 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in district play.

“It didn’t go the way we wanted, but when you play the number five team in the state, everything needs to be perfect,” said Moran head coach John Hughes. “Overall, I’m proud of the guys for the way they played, and for their fight and determination under the circumstances.”

Hughes was pleased that the Bulldogs came out injury free.

“That was key for us,” he said. “Now we have to prepare for a very solid Loraine team that is coming off a win over Trent last week. They are a well-coached team, and it should be a good game between the two of us.”

The 7:30 p.m. match-up with Loraine (5-3) on Friday, Nov. 1 will be Moran’s last home game of the season and senior night.

“We will say goodbye to Harley Schafer and Jonas Sotelo,” said the coach. “These two young men have been great leaders for me this year and bought into what I wanted to do with this football program.”

Moran can still earn a spot in the playoffs if they defeat both Loraine this week and Trent on Friday, Nov. 8 to claim second place in District 6.

Jonas Sotelo found Harley Schafer for an 11-yard pass. Braden Crow completed a pass to Arren Hawley for one yard, had five incompletes, and also two passes that were intercepted by the Hornets.

Carrying the ball for Moran were Lyric Huskey, Crow, Sotelo, Hawley, and Colby Bell.

Huskey also picked up 71 yards on three returns.

Credited with tackles for the Bulldogs were Sotelo with five, Hawley, Huskey, and Schafer with two each, and Bell and Trey Cox with one apiece.
