Boys’ bi-district opponent still unknown

The Lion basketball team traveled to Stamford on Tuesday for the regular season finale, hoping to bring home the district title by handing the Bulldogs a second loss.

Albany had to settle for second in District 8-2A after a 77-55 loss to Stamford.

The Lions (12-5, 7-3) will advance to the bi-district round of the playoffs next Monday or Tuesday, with the opponent to be decided in a District 7-2A tiebreaker for second place between Eldorado and Christoval.

That game will be played Friday, with the time and location of the bi-district to be determined afterwards.

The Lions split games last week, suffering a 41-40 loss to the visiting Haskell Indians on Feb. 5 that gave Albany a second district loss.

“We had another very slow start and never got into an offensive rhythm,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “We did well at times getting to the basket, but we just didn’t finish. We were too passive on the glass, which gave Haskell extra possessions down the stretch that hurt us.”

Scoring for the Lions were Cameron Dacus 9, Cutter Cowart 2, Joshua Dyer 6, Ben West 7, Derek Isbell 6, and Coby Knight 10.

Haskell 9 10 13 9 - 41

The Lions got back on the winning track with a 56-28 win over Cross Plains last Friday in the final home game of the season.

“We did a much better job of being aggressive on both ends of the floor,” Peacock said. “We moved the ball well on offense and created transition baskets with our defense.”

The coach thanked the six seniors on the team.

“This was a fun way to send the seniors out on their final home game,” he said. “Those six guys have been a lot of fun to coach for the past six years.”

Scoring for the Lions were Dacus 10, Cowart 8, Blaine Kayga 2, Dyer 14, Kade Everitt 1, West 6, Isbell 6, and Knight 7.

JV Results

The JV Lions won both games last week, starting with a 37-36 victory over Haskell on Feb. 5.

“This was one of our better overall games,” coach Rod Britting said. “It was a true team effort.”

The coach named Ryder Wilkins, Jackson Chapman, and Seth Hale as offensive standouts, along with Chapman, Brooks Neece, and Luke Ivy on defense.

Scoring were Chapman 6, Jaheim Newton 4, Cooper Fairchild 5, Neece 4, Ivy 1, Wilkins 10, Robert Bailey 1, and Hale 6.

The JV improved to 5-4 in district with a 48-24 win over Cross Plains last Friday.

“The guys hit on all cylinders tonight,” Britting said. “We beat this team in overtime the first time we played, and we doubled them up this time. We have really improved.”

Chapman and Bailey were named offensive standouts, along with Neece, Hale, and Newton on defense.

“We played really good defense early and Robert (Bailey) hit some outside shots to loosen them up defensively,” the coach said. “This was our best game of the year.”

Scoring were Chapman 10, Newton 5, Fairchild 5, Neece 6, Wilkins 4, Cade Neve 2, Bailey 10, Hale 2, Dillon Hindman 2, and Brodey Jones 2.
