Boys back on court this week

The Lion varsity basketball team got off to a late but successful start last week, defeating the visiting Abilene Hawks.

The Lions have had a week-long break for Christmas, returning to the court on Friday at the Windthorst Tournament.

Albany is scheduled to play Vernon at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the first round, followed by a 6:30 p.m. second round game against City View. The Lions will play Iowa Park at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, ending the tourney with a 6:00 p.m. game against Slidell.

“This will be some very tough competition for us,”head basketball coach Ryder Peacock said. “Playing three larger schools, along with one of the top teams in Class A will provide some unique challenges through size, athleticism, and skill.”

The coach was very pleased with the Lions’ 67-52 win over the Hawks last Tuesday.

“Even though we have had just one game, I am excited about the possibilities for these guys,” he said. “We didn’t play great, but still managed to put 67 points on the board. Our defense will get better with practice and more games.”

Peacock said that the Lions will once again face tough competition in district, but he is very happy with the potential the team is working with.

“This was a good start for us and something we are looking forward to building on,” he said.

Albany shot 50 percent from the floor and 47 percent at the line during their first outing.

Ryan Hill was named offensive standout, with Josh Dyer and Cameron Dacus named for defense.
