Bass Roundup Hooks Another Success

The second annual Ben Richey Boys Ranch Bass Roundup brought anglers from across Texas to Hubbard Creek Lake on June 13, raising more than $10,000 for the Boys Ranch while paying out more than $54,000 in tournament and Calcutta winnings.

Hosted by Goodnight Steakhouse and the Hereford Motel, the event drew 39 teams for a weekend of fishing, fellowship and friendly competition. Organizers said support from anglers, sponsors and attendees helped make the tournament another success in its second year.

The weekend opened Friday night with a dinner and Calcutta that drew a packed crowd and set the tone for the tournament. Former World Series MVP Josh Beckett was among the anglers and guests who attended, along with Graham Resaugh, Chris Curry, Jammie Nail, John Venable and Brian Bird of World Bass Enterprise.

“We were grateful to have such an amazing group of teams and anglers show up to support this great cause,” organizer Brook Hatchett said.

Saturday morning began with an on-the-water rendition of the National Anthem performed by angler David Glenn before competitors launched onto Hubbard Creek Lake.

“We are thankful for the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country, and we were proud to honor the flag and the freedoms it represents,” organizer Jason Harlow said.

When weigh-in concluded, Trace Antues and Griffin Antues topped the field with a tournament-winning five-fish limit weighing 33.08 pounds. The winning weight matched last year’s championship mark and led a strong field of anglers.

Lane Ratliff and Austin Pemberton finished second with 31.09 pounds, while Braxton Highttower and Tristan Marsh claimed third place with 29.09 pounds.

Highttower and Marsh also landed the tournament’s largest fish, earning Big Bass honors with a 9.02-pound largemouth.

Six teams weighed in more than 13 pounds, while 20 teams brought fish to the scales during the tournament.

More than $10,000 from the event will be donated to Ben Richey Boys Ranch. Harlow said supporting the organization remains the driving force behind the tournament and thanked the volunteers who helped make the event possible.

“I am happy to help support its mission of helping young men build strong futures, and special thanks to Brook Hatchett, who had to volunteer many hours of her own time to make this event so great, plus a shout to YDT for the handling of the weigh-in,” Harlow said.

Organizers have already begun planning next year’s tournament, which is scheduled for June 12, 2027.
