The Lady Lion varsity volleyball team was able to get back on the court last Saturday for the first time in two weeks following a halt in their schedule because of cases of COVID-19 on the squad.

Albany traveled to Moran on Saturday as they restarted their schedule, picking up a 25-11, 25-9, 25-10 win.

The Lady Lions were also on the court Tuesday, earning a 25-9, 25-12, 25-14 win over the visiting Newcastle Lady Bobcats. Complete results were not available at press time but will be reported next week.

Albany (15-2, 2-0) has only two district games remaining as the second round of district action among the 2A bracket teams will start Friday.

Albany will host Ranger Friday in a make-up game for a bout originally set during the time the Lady Lions were in quarantine.

Game time for the varsity is 4:00 p.m., followed by the JV at 5:00 p.m.

The Lady Lions will be on the road next Tuesday for games in Hawley, which will decide the order the three teams in the 2A bracket advance into the playoffs.

JV II will start the action at 4:30 p.m., followed by the JV I at 5:30 p.m. The varsity game is expected to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Albany is hosting one final set of non-district games on Saturday, Oct. 24 to end the regular season.

Albany head coach M.J. Reneau said that the varsity girls, who only were able to practice briefly last Friday for the first time since ending their quarantine, were more than ready to be back in the game.

“It felt so good to be back on the court and in action with these girls,” said the coach, who was also quarantined. “The girls play as if they had never missed a practice.”

The coach said that she doesn’t feel the team was hurt due to the two-week break.

“Even though it was unexpected, the break was actually good for us,” she said. “We were able to get some rest for nagging injuries, and it reminded us to take advantage of every day we have together as a team.”

The coach says she expects the team to finish the regular schedule strong and be ready to head into the playoffs.

“I am so thankful to the other coaches who kept the JV players going while I was out,” she said. “The girls all have the best attitude at this point in the season.”
