Sophomore Cole Chapman advanced to the regional track and field meet in three events on Tuesday, with five other Lions and Lady Lions moving on as well during the area meet for field events on Tuesday.

Originally, both field and running events were scheduled for all day on Wednesday in Graham, but organizers moved field events up by one day to Tuesday due to concerns about rain that was in the forecast.

A large number of athletes returned to Graham on Wednesday for one remaining field event and all the running contests. Results were not available at press time but will be reported next week.

The top four places at the area meet advance to the regional track meet set for April 23-23 in Springtown.

The Lady Lions took two relay teams and both the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdle events, while the boys also took two relays to the area meet along with both hurdle events and the open quarter.

Chapman took first place in both the long jump and high jump, and also was one of a three-person Albany sweep in the triple jump.

Sophomore Tye Edgar won the pole vault at the area meet, but will be unable to complete at the regional meet. Albany’s Jayden Lucas placed fifth and will move up as the alternate in the event.

“We had guys set personal records in the high jump and pole vault,” coach Rod Britting said. “While there weren’t any records in the triple jump because the guys had to run into a head wind, it was great to again sweep the event with the top three places.”

On the girls side, Sarah Cotter qualified with a fourth place finish, while Alli Hill was just out of the money with a fifth place finish. Both girls jumped 5-02, but Cotter advanced with fewer misses.

Girls Area Results – Tuesday

High jump – 4. Sarah Cotter 5-02. 5. Alli Hill 5-02.

Pole vault – 4. Briley Tabor 8-0.

Boys Area Results – Tuesday

Pole vault – 1. Tye Edgar 12-06. 5. Jayden Lucas 10-6.

Long jump – 1. Cole Chapman 21-01.50.

High jump – 1. Cole Chapman 6-02.

Triple jump – 1. Jaheim Newton 42-08. 2. Cole Chapman 41-05.50. 3. Luke Ivy 41-02.50.

The area qualifiers competed in a special meet in Bangs last Thursday. While most of the local athletes competed in events other than the ones they qualified in, their coaches said the meet was good practice and very competitive.
