Albany tennis players compete in first team tourney

The Albany Lions tennis team competed in two events last week with 11 players making up seven entries in an Albany tennis meet on Wednesday, March 3, while the bulk of the lineup spent the weekend at the Brock team tournament.
“The most important thing is finding the kids some playing time,” coach M.J. Reneau said. “The ones I couldn’t take to Brock got two or three matches apiece here. It worked out really well.”
In the Albany meet, the boys doubles team of Luke Ivy and Cooper Fairchild went 3-0. In girls doubles, the teams of Leddie Leech/Robyn Trail and Callan Edgar/Maci Hatchett both went 1-1 with Brooklyn Abbate/Cambree Clegg going 0-2.
In boys singles, Cason Fairchild went 1-1 and Keatin Russell went 0-2, while Chelsy Parsons went 0-2 in girls singles.
At Brock, Albany went 2-2 to finish third behind Peaster and Brock. The Lions defeated Keene 10-2 and Poolville 10-0 on Friday, March 4. On Saturday, March 5, Albany lost to Brock 10-2 and Peaster 10-3.
“I didn’t think the scores reflected how we played against Brock and Peaster,” Reneau said. “The matches were really close and we lost a couple of tiebreakers that could have easily gone either way.”
Several individual matches were left unfinished after the team outcome was determined.
“We were in a time crunch, and it also depended on who had matches later in the day,” Reneau said. “We had three rounds, so I didn’t want to play out my matches early in the day because we had a lot of tennis after that.”
Reneau said the Lions got everything she wanted out of the tournament.
“We got to see a lot of competition and a lot of good tennis,” she said. “I feel like our team rose to the occasion and played really well.”
