Albany tennis picks up wins in return to spring competition

By Sam Waller

The Albany tennis team returned from spring break with about a month to get ready for district, the process starting Tuesday, March 18 at the first of two Abilene High tournaments on the schedule.

The netters played in a quadrangular event Monday, March 24 a Vernon. Those results will be reported next week.

Albany still has tournaments remaining Thursday, April 3 at Abilene High and Tuesday, April 8 at Vernon. Coach M.J. Reneau said she is also looking for at least a dual match the week of April 14. The District 10-2A tournament will be played Monday-Tuesday, April 21-22 at Rose Park Tennis Center in Abilene.

At Abilene, all Albany entries won at least one match, with Aiden Vickers in boys singles and the girls doubles pair of Finlee Brown and Charli Trail both winning two.

“We had some good rest over spring break and the kids came back excited to play some bigger schools last week,” Reneau said. “We had some really great competition.”

Out of 16 matches played, 11 were against opponents from Class 3A schools or larger with Albany winning six. Another four matches were against District 10-2A members.

“All of that was good for us,” Reneau said.

Junior High

Reneau said junior high tennis will begin practice Tuesday, April 1 after the completion of the junior high track season.

The junior high has a meet with Zephyr on April 24 and the district tournament April 28-29.
