Albany scores big win over Roscoe

The Lion football team proved to doubters that they are the real thing last Friday, plowing over Roscoe 49-6 for a second straight district win.

Starting the season with an 0-5 pre-district record, the Lions opened District 7-2A with a victory over Baird and now added a second decisive win over the Plowboys in Roscoe.

Albany will be at home this Friday to host the Cross Plains Buffaloes at Robert Nail Stadium as the district race continues. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

“I am very pleased that the guys are now 2-0 in district,” head coach Denney Faith said. “The kids are playing with confidence after a really tough pre-district schedule.”

The Buffaloes are also entering the fray with a 2-0 district record. They are 6-1 overall.

“We are looking forward to a tough Cross Plains team coming as district continues,” Faith said. “They are a little different this year, playing a lot more spread on offense instead of a power running team like in the past.”

He added that the Buffs defense will be strong and really aggressive as usual.

Cross Plains defeated Haskell 19-14 in their district opener and beat Baird 25-6 last week.

Faith commended the Lions for a decisive win in Roscoe last Friday.

“We were fairly balanced again on offense, throwing for 141 yards and rushing for 230 yards,” he said. “Ben (West) was pretty efficient in his passing game with 10 of 13, and our running backs did a great job. All of that is attributable to the offensive line playing well.”

Faith was also happy that the Lions cut out any turnovers last week.

“It all combined for a great offensive effort for our guys,” he said.

On the defensive side, Faith said that the Lions held Roscoe to 150 yards of offense.

“We defended against the run and the passing game well, putting a lot of pressure on their quarterback,” said Faith. “We did a great job of getting people to the football.”

The Lions scored a touchdown on a defensive play in the third quarter.

“We forced a fumble when Roscoe was at their own one-yard line and Cutter (Edgar) recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown,” Faith said. “Any time you can score while on defense, that really helps out the offense.”

The coach also commented that Ryan Hill was seven for seven on PATs and that the coverage teams played well.

“It was a pretty complete game for us in all three phases,” he said.

The coach did say that the Lions need to work on eliminating penalties.

“We killed one of our own drives in the second quarter due to penalties,” Faith said. “We have got to do better and be more disciplined.”
