The Albany Lions and Lady Lions actually had a dry day for a track meet last week, although gusty wind was a factor.

Albany hosted athletes from 13 schools on Friday, March 29 for the Roaring Lion Relays. The meet was the final tuneup before the District 10-2A meet, scheduled for Thursday, April 4 (today) at Cisco.

The top four finishers in each event at the district meet qualify for the area meet with District 9, scheduled for Thursday, April 11 at Graham.

Albany finished fifth in the varsity boys team standings with 74 points, while the Lady Lions tied for eighth with 24 points. The JV boys were second with 130 points, and Albany scored 18 points to place fifth in JV girls.

“We did some good things,” boys coach Rod Britting said. “The mile relay ran a good time, getting down to 3:32, and the 800 relay ranade cent time with a bit of a bad handoff. That gives us an idea of where we are.”

Girls coach Lauren Peacock said the meet, which included every district member but Anson, was a good preview for the district meet.

“We were able to compare where we are in some events compared to the rest of the district,” she said. “We put up some good times. I think we’ve got a chance of getting some people out.”

Britting echoed the sentiment.

“We’re just trying to size ourselves up on where do we fit with the other teams in our district,” he said.

In the varsity boys division, Adam Hill won both hurdles races. He ran 14.79 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 39.54 in the 300 hurdles.

Luke Marshall cleared 14 feet to win the pole vault, his best height this season. Breylon Billington and Mason McCloy also placed in the event.

The vaulters dealt with a strong breeze that, fortunately, was a tailwind.

“Luke was able to use that,” Britting said. “His 14-foot jump was really solid. That was probably the cleanest jump I’ve ever seen him make, a good foot of air under him.”

Albany’s 1600 relay of Chip Chambers, Jaxson Street, Jayce Tinkle, and Hill finished second. Chambers, Street, Billington, and Calhan Fairchild placed third in the 800 relay. Tinkle was third in the 400.

Albany also received points from Hill and Lanxton Viertel in the shot put with Viertel also placing in the discus.

In the varsity girls division, Kiana Robers on finis hed second in the shot put and discus. The senior threw 37-4 in the shot in her first time in the event this season. Her 131-2 in the discus marked a 7-foot improvement from the Clyde meet.

“Kiana’s coming around,” Peacock said. “I thinks she’s starting to hit her peak at the right time.”

The Lady Lions also scored in the 400 with Zayne Lefevre third and Ashlyn Miller fifth. The meet was Lefevre’s first of the season.

“Having Zayne back gives us some options for district,” Peacock said. “We’re looking at throwing a mile relay together andmaybegettinganotherspot at area that way.”

Albany Girls Had Near Misses in the hurdles withAvery Everitt finishing 0.02 seconds out of the scoring in the 100s and 0.77 seconds out in the 300s.

In the JV boys division, Albany won six events, including two relays. The 400 relay of Christian Hernandez, Wesley Gleitz, Jack Nail, and Shawn

Keen ran 46.67. Britton Farmer replaced Keen on the 1600 relay, which ran 3:48.41. The 800 relay was second.

Individually, Nail won the 100, Zane Green won the 200, and Tony Wheeler won both hurdles races.

In JV girls,Alli McDaniel wasAlbany’s lone entry. She won the discus and was second in the shot put.

District Meet

The district meet will start at 8:30 a.m. today with the running of the 3200.

Running Prelims Except for distance races (800 and up) and relays will begin at 9:15 a.m.

Field events start at noon with running finals at 5:30 p.m.

“Our No. 1 goal is to see who we can get to the next level at area, then from area to regional,” Britting said. “That will give those kids a few more weeks to work. Hopefully, that will help bring times down and get where they need to be.”

Peacock said the aim for the Lady Lions is quality over quantity.

“We just don’t have the numbers some of the other teams have,” she said. “Cisco, Haskell, Stamford, those teams go three deep in almost every event.”
