Albany girls start second half of district

The Lady Lion volleyball girls split district games last week as they started the second round of district action.

Albany hosted Hawley, the District 6-2A leader, on Tuesday. The Lady Lions lost the match 10-25, 13-25, 21-25. Complete results will be printed next week.

The loss drops Albany to 4-5 in the district race, currently fourth behind undefeated Hawley, with Newcastle in second and Ranger in third place.

Hawley and Albany are the only true Class 2A schools in the district, meaning both are guaranteed playoff spots in the 2A bracket. The remaining schools are fighting for three playoff berths in the Class 1A bracket.

Albany is off this weekend with a bye, returning to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 16 in Moran with a 6:00 p.m. game time.

The Lady Lions started the second half of district with a 25-9, 25-22, 25-9 win over Strawn on Oct. 2.

“The girls played much better as a team and stayed consistent from start to finish,” said coach Kimberly Hill. “It was good to get on the winning track again.”

Albany traveled to Newcastle on Saturday, bringing back a 12-25, 17-25, 18-25 loss.

“While there were some bright spots occasionally, this was definitely not one of our better efforts,” Hill said. “We struggled from start to finish, and when we did have a bit of momentum in the last two sets, we had several unforced errors that got us off track.”

Hill said that the team is struggling with consistency.

“The girls have to be on the same page and perform even the smallest tasks correctly,” the coach said. “Until we are disciplined in those areas we will continue to struggle.”

JV Beats Newcastle

The JV earned a 25-13, 25-19 win Saturday in Newcastle.

“We started a little shaky,” coach Lauren Peacock said. “We had a few errors in serve receive right off the bat, but we overcame it and settled in. After the first few minutes of the first set, we were in control of the game.”

The coach commended the team for passing, setting, and hitting well.

“Sara Beth Cotter and Landree Connally were very aggressive at the net and attacked very well,” the coach said. “Carli Edgar was our most consistent server and hit several spots that I challenged her to hit.”

The coach also praised Savannah Hobbs, Sara Smith, and Isabel Alvarez for playing solid games.
