The varsity Lady Lions won three out of four scrimmages last week to start the 2020 season.

Albany hosted a set of varsity-only scrimmages against Lingleville and Benjamin on Friday, then traveled to Breckenridge for scrimmages against the Lady Bucks and Wichita Falls Hirschi on Saturday.

The regular season opened on Tuesday at home with the Lady Lions defeating the Lady Bucks 25-23, 25-23, 25-17. Details of the match will be reported next week.

Albany will travel to Bangs on Friday for a set of three games starting at 12:00 noon with the JVII. The JV team will play at 1:00 p.m., followed by the varsity bout at 2:00 p.m.

All three local teams will be back in action on Saturday, hosting Coleman starting at 10:00 a.m.

Albany will also host Jim Ned on Tuesday, Aug. 18 starting at 4:30 p.m.

Currently, coach M.J. Reneau is searching for a game for Friday, Aug. 21, but will play in Eastland Saturday, Aug. 22 starting at 10:00 a.m.

The lone loss in scrimmage action was to Benjamin last Friday in the first of two matches. Albany defeated Lingleville in the second game.

“Benjamin was a very confident team to face in our opening scrimmage,” Reneau said. “We were able to get some different looks within our rotation, and we had to work through first-game jitters.”

The coach added that the team played better against Lingleville in the second match.

“We won both of our scrimmages in Breckenridge on Saturday against the Lady Bucks and Hirschi,” she said. “We had much better chemistry on the court on Saturday, shutting down the middle against Hirschi and playing great defense against Breckenridge.”

The JVI split games against Breckenridge’s JV on Saturday, while the JVII lost to Breckenridge and defeated Hirschi.

“I think the girls had a lot of fun during two-a-days and during the scrimmages,” Reneau said. “They are really coming together for the regular season.”

She said the varsity is looking particularly strong, thanks to a large group of returning players from last year.

“We have eight seniors who provide great leadership and attitude,” the coach said. “Most of the girls came in already in good shape thanks to the summer conditioning and are ready to compete.”
