AJHS athletes place at Breck

The junior high track teams took a large contingent to Breckenridge on Tuesday, March 5, bringing home a number of medals and ribbons along with improved times and distances.

The junior high is off this week for spring break, returning to action on Friday, March 22 in Eastland.

The weather in Breckenridge was cold on the day of the meet, causing the jumping field events to be cancelled. Only the discus and shot put events preceded the running session.

“It is so hard to run your best in the cold, but some girls did improve their times or measurements last week,” seventh grade girls coach Kimberly Hill said.

Ginger Norton, eighth grade girls coach, echoed Hill.

“Our mile relay knocked off another eight seconds to finish second behind Cisco, and overall, most of the girls bettered their times,” Norton said.

The Breckenridge meet was held just four days after the opening meet in Clyde.

“Going back to back like we did, you typically are not going to see a lot of drops in times, but we did have a few kids who improved, including a relay team that dropped five seconds,” boys coach Ryder Peacock said. “The eighth grade team built off the first meet with another strong performance.”

The coach said that the seventh graders improved their times as well.

Some results in individual running events were reported by heats only.
